7 Reasons Spam Filters Eat Email
There are two parts to the spam-filter issue. The first part has to do with the
format of the email and the second part has to do with the content of the message.
First, let me discuss formatting.
While greater than 90% of all e-mail clients can view HTML based e-mail many HTML
based e-mail messages, those that are graphically rich and look like a web page, often get
filtered out by spam filters. Too many images, too much code, not the right kind of
HTML code, there are many factors that can play into e-mail message being dropped and
not delivered.
One way to avoid most filters is to keep your message in text format. Send your message
in text format, and not HTML. You may be thinking that doing it this way will hurt,
because you can’t show images like your logo, food photos, etc. Well, you're right.
There's a sacrifice for delivery over detail. Therefore, a balance exists that you need to
strike.
One idea that we have tested with good results is to design the campaign as if there were
a web page, which is what you do if you are going to send an HTML based e-mail
anyway. However, instead of sending that web page in HTML format you construct a
single column, very skinny, text e-mail. The email should include a link to the beautiful
HTML page, so that if interested party would like to see the graphics images and logos in
all their glory they simply click that link. Then they’re taken out to the website and they
can view the full-blown campaign.
If you still want to send an HTML based e-mail keeping it simple is the surest way to
avoid spam filters. If you run a Google search on HTML email marketing you will
quickly find the basic principles for spam filters and how to avoid them.
